  1. PC INSTALLATION
  2.  
  3. 1) You must have a LEXIS(R)-NEXIS(R) ID that supports: 
  4.      a) FREESTYLE(TM) Searching
  5.      b) An option to print to an attached printer and 
  6.         remote LEXIS-NEXIS printer
  7.      c) No Password
  8.  
  9.    (To make any changes to your LEXIS-NEXIS ID, call 
  10.    your LEXIS-NEXIS account representative)
  11.  
  12. 2) Word 2.0 could not be automated to add the toolbar 
  13.    icon.
  14.  
  15. 3) Setup will not allow you to install Online Connection
  16.    to both WordPerfect 6.0 and WordPerfect 6.1 in order to 
  17.    prevent having both WP6.0 and WP6.1 icons on the LEXIS-NEXIS
  18.    Toolbar. WP6.0 and WP6.1 share code and if you try to launch 
  19.    one while the other is open, memory conflicts will occur.
  20.  
  21. 4) Older versions of Folio VIEWS 3.1 may require two patch
  22.    disks (31updt.zip 8/31/94 and 31fix2.zip 10/28/94). You can
  23.    download these from the LEXIS-NEXIS bulletin board at
  24.    1-800-453-5392.
  25.  
  26. 5) Memory restrictions within WordPerfect 6.1 prevent the user
  27.    from Adding Sources from WordPerfect 6.1.  To get around this
  28.    Add the sources from the OLC dialog from the Toolbar.
  29.  
  30. 6) You are encouraged not to mix Word 6.0 and Word 7.0 on the same PC.
  31.  
  32.  
  33. LAN INSTALLATION
  34.  
  35. Online Connection can be installed on workstations that are
  36. accessing the following network applications:
  37.  
  38. Microsoft Word (versions 2.0, 6.0 and 7.0)
  39. WordPerfect (versions 5.2, 6.0 and 6.1)
  40. Lotus Ami Pro (version 3.0)
  41. Folio VIEWS 3.1 or 3.1a
  42. Folio Bound VIEWS 3.1 or 3.1a
  43. Counsel Connect 3.2
  44. CheckCite 4.30
  45. CiteRite 5.20
  46. CompareRite 5.10
  47. FullAuthority 5.20
  48. LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software for Windows (versions 4.1)
  49.  
  50. To do so, the LAN Administrator executes the following steps:
  51.  
  52. 1) Copy the Online Connection installation diskettes into a 
  53.    setup directory (for example: g:\OLCSETUP\) on the network.
  54.   
  55. 2) Use a text editor to make the following modifications in
  56.    the LEXISET.INS file located in the new setup directory.
  57.  
  58.      a) Set ScanDrive=false
  59.         This will prevent the setup program from reading the
  60.         user's network drive.
  61.  
  62.      b) For each network application in which you would like to
  63.         install Online Connection, add the complete path to that 
  64.         application's executable in the applicationpath= entry.
  65.         For those applications in which you do not wish to
  66.         install Online Connection, leave the entry blank.
  67.  
  68.      c) You can customize the default list of LEXIS-NEXIS 
  69.         library and files in the section titled [Library/Files].
  70.  
  71.      d) Run the setup program.  When setup has successfully 
  72.         completed, edit the LEXISET.INS file in the install
  73.         directory (not the copy in the WINDOWS directory)
  74.         setting ScanDrive back to true (ScanDrive=true).
  75.  
  76.      e) To install OLC for BIS version, set INSTALL=BIS.  If
  77.         INSTALL= does not exist, default is LIS version.
  78.  
  79.      f) To NOT install Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, set
  80.         MARHUB=OFF.  If MARHUB= does not exist, default is ON.
  81.  
  82.  
  83. Next, The user must run setup.exe from the new network setup
  84. directory (for example: G:\OLCSETUP\SETUP). This will 
  85. automatically copy the appropriate files to the user's 
  86. Windows and Windows\System directories. This should be all that is 
  87. required for most LAN installations.
  88.  
  89. NOTE TO NETWORK APPLICATION USERS:
  90.  
  91. All preference paths for macros, templates, etc. must point to
  92. subdirectories to which you have read write access. (See explaination 
  93. of LOCATIONS OF FILES COPIED TO APPLICATION DIRECTORIES below). 
  94.  
  95.  
  96. NOTE TO MS WORD USERS:
  97.  
  98. Setup first attempts to modify Normal.dot in the user's directory.
  99. If the file does not exist in the user's directory, OLC Setup will
  100. attempt to modify Normal.dot in the Workgroup directory.  
  101.  
  102. The directory either needs to be write accessible by the user,
  103. or the NORMAL.DOT file must be removed from the directory causing
  104. OLC Setup to create the file in the user's directory.
  105.  
  106. SPECIAL LAN INSTRUCTIONS
  107.  
  108. For most LAN Installations this is all that is required.  However,
  109. if the LAN administrator does not want the users to have to run the 
  110. setup program locally, they will need to manually copy the following
  111. files to the user's workstation.  
  112.  
  113. An example of this would be those networks where the PCs are in
  114. a lab type environment where a given PC could be used by any number
  115. of users.
  116.  
  117. To help the LAN Administrator in special LAN configurations 
  118. the following paragraphs are provided to describe the files
  119. copied by the Setup program and their purpose.  From these 
  120. descriptions it should be possible to determine what needs to 
  121. be done in order to fit Online Connection into any LAN environment.
  122.  
  123. File:  LEXISET.INS
  124.  
  125. Location: Install Directory
  126.  
  127. Description:
  128.      As mentioned above, this is the first file of concern for the LAN
  129.      Administrator.  It tells the Setup program:
  130.  
  131.      1) where to look for applications
  132.      2) whether to search the install target drive for applications
  133.      3) a default directory for the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software
  134.      4) provides a list of all available applications.
  135.  
  136.  
  137. File:  LEXIS-GA.INI
  138.  
  139. Location: WINDOWS Directory
  140.  
  141. Description:
  142.      This is the User Preference file for the Online Connection 
  143.      Software. It has settings for the:
  144.  
  145.      1) Saved search list 
  146.      2) Library/Files list
  147.      3) Position of the Toolbar
  148.      4) Temporary file subdirectories
  149.      5) Default settings for several options under the [OPTIONS] 
  150.         heading of the file.  This file must be copied for each 
  151.         user as it will be dynamic and unique for each user.
  152.  
  153. File:  VIEWS.INI and BVIEWS.INI
  154.  
  155. Location: Wherever Folio VIEWS and bound versions of Folio VIEWS were 
  156.      installed.
  157.  
  158. Description:
  159.      These files are the User Preference files for either Folio VIEWS
  160.      or bound versions of Folio VIEWS.  As well as User Preferences 
  161.      they hold information specific to infobases.  These files must be
  162.      copied for each user for they are dynamic and specific to the 
  163.      needs of each user.
  164.  
  165. File: Assorted EXEs, TXT, XLT and HLP files
  166.  
  167. Location: WINDOWS Directory
  168.  
  169. Description:
  170.      The following EXEs, TXT, XLT and HLP files are to be copied 
  171.      into the WINDOWS subdirectory.

  284. LEXIS-NEXIS TOOLBAR
  285.  
  286. 1) Display of the LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar is a configurable option.
  287.  
  288. 2) If you have Word 2.0, Word 6.0 and/or Word 7.0 icons on the
  289.    LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar, the toolbar will not allow you to have
  290.    all versions open at the same time. The toolbar icons will
  291.    point to the Word application that was opened first.
  292.  
  293. 3) The toolbar will be added to the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software 
  294.    program group. If there is no LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software
  295.    program group, a new LEXIS-NEXIS Toolbar program group will
  296.    be created.
  297.  
  298. 4) When you close the toolbar, the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software 
  299.    closes.
  300.  
  301. 5) When you close the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software, the toolbar
  302.    does not automatically close.
  303.  
  304. 6) The toolbar may be customized.  To do so refer to the Online Help.
  305.  
  306.  
  307. DOWNLOADING TO WORD PROCESSING AND FOLIO VIEWS
  308.  
  309. 1) In the Citation and Get tabs, the Download To Application 
  310.    list box is defaulted to whatever application launched
  311.    the LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar.
  312.  
  313. 2) The Default Download Directory is a static text field. It 
  314.    reflects what the default download directory is set to in 
  315.    the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software version 4.0 for Windows.
  316.  
  317. 3) All downloads from the toolbar to Folio VIEWS and Folio Bound VIEWS
  318.    use the LEXIS-NEXIS import filter for creating, appending or
  319.    inserting LEXIS documents to an infobase. 
  320.  
  321. 4) Downloads of large documents or document sets may take an
  322.    extreme amount of time.  Although the download may appear
  323.    to be complete, it is NOT complete until the data appears in 
  324.    your target application.  DO NOT interfere with your application
  325.    until the data appears in your target application as this may
  326.    result in data loss.
  327.  
  328.  
  329. SAVED SEARCH LIST
  330.  
  331. 1) The saved search list is limited to a 1K buffer, which is
  332.    equivalent to about 100 saved searches. The maximum number of
  333.    saved searches will vary depending upon the type of searches
  334.    saved.
  335.  
  336. 2) If you have a mixture of saved searches in the search list 
  337.    (some saved with client validation on and some saved with 
  338.    client validation off), execution of saved searches will react
  339.    differently depending upon if client validation is on or off in
  340.    the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software for Windows when executing
  341.    saved searches.
  342.  
  343. 3) UPDATE does not save searches in the Saved Search List.  Update
  344.    is enabled only for those customers that are using CD-ROM's that
  345.    are configured to work with the LEXIS-NEXIS Update feature.
  346.  
  347.  
  348. ONLINE CONNECTION SPECIAL OPTIONS
  349.  
  350. 1) You can configure Online Connection by changing the following 
  351.    LEXIS-GA.INI and the LEXISET.INS entries:
  352.      
  353.     HideButtonText=0 
  354.         Removes the Online Connection icon from toolbar
  355.       
  356.  
  357. GENERAL INFORMATION AND POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
  358.  
  359.  1)  When configuring for Word 7 under Windows NT and you get a Word 
  360.      Basic Error 582 "Unable to load specified library"; rename your 
  361.      current ctl3d32.dll, if one exists, then copy ctl3d32.dll located 
  362.      in Word7 folder of OLC diskettes/CD into your windows\system 
  363.      directory. Go into windows\temp and click on the lexinst7.dot. 
  364.      If the "LEXIS" button does not get added then click on MACRO 
  365.      under TOOLS hilite AutoOpen and click RUN.
  366.  
  367.  2)  If the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software for Windows times out while
  368.      the LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar download dialog box is open, and you
  369.      click OK to continue with the download the PC will eventually 
  370.      lock.
  371.  
  372.  3)  Switching to other applications while downloading may cause
  373.      problems.
  374.  
  375.  4)  If the toolbar has the focus and you hit the Esc key, the 
  376.      PC locks.
  377.  
  378.  5)  In Lotus AmiPro, if you have a document open and do a download 
  379.      to Lotus AmiPro creating a new document, but give it the same 
  380.      name as the open document, you will see a message that 
  381.      the document exists, replace? If you answer Yes, the PC locks.
  382.  
  383.  6)  Lotus AmiPro and Word must have a document open or be in the 
  384.      new document state to access the Online Connection or
  385.      a GPF may occur.
  386.  
  387.  7)  Citation searches submitted from within an application with the
  388.      download set for Folio VIEWS or Folio Bound VIEWS will not be run 
  389.      through the LEXIS-NEXIS import filter.  It is recommended the user 
  390.      select "None - Stay in LEXIS" as the target for the citation 
  391.      download. When the search is complete the user should download 
  392.      from the toolbar to Folio VIEWS or Folio Bound VIEWS forcing the 
  393.      data through the import filter.
  394.  
  395.  8)  Boolean and FREESTYLE searches are limited to 256 characters in 
  396.      the "Search Request" edit field of the Online Connection Main 
  397.      Dialog Tab.
  398.     
  399.  9)  Citation searches are limited to 128 characters in the "Search
  400.      Requested" edit field of the Online Connection Main Dialog Tab.
  401.  
  402.  10) Drag select search formulation for any search type is limited to
  403.      128 characters. If more than 128 is selected, the search string 
  404.      will be truncated (in some cases it will be truncated to 0).  
  405.      If more than 128 characters is needed, Windows "Copy" and "Paste" 
  406.      clipboard functions may be used.
  407.  
  408.  11) If both Auto-Cite and SHEPARD's are selected, and the default 
  409.      download Application is "None - Stay in LEXIS",  you will only 
  410.      receive the Auto-Cite data when downloading from the toolbar.
  411.  
  412.  12) When appending a Citation download to a Folio infobase,  there 
  413.      are no "Retrieving Document" messages displayed.
  414.  
  415.  13) Tabular type data may become skewed when downloaded to a word
  416.      processor if the word processor is not set up to use fix type 
  417.      fonts.
  418.  
  419.  14) DO NOT use Boolean search connectors in the FREESTYLE "Search
  420.      Request" edit field.  The connectors may cause problems with 
  421.      Online Connection.
  422.  
  423.  15) MVP ID users must use care to use only those Library/Files to 
  424.      which they have access.  It is recommended they prepopulate 
  425.      their Library/File list to only those Library/Files to which 
  426.      they have access.
  427.     
  428.  16) When executing a program link launching the Online Connection Main
  429.      Dialog Tab,  the view field always defaults to KWIC.  Program 
  430.      links designed to autosubmit do not change the view field.
  431.  
  432.  17) All LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software User Preferences must be set 
  433.      prior to executing the LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar.  Changing preferences 
  434.      after the toolbar is launched may result in problems.
  435.  
  436.  18) You can only select to download the current document or all 
  437.      documents when viewing an answer set in Cite mode. Anything else 
  438.      will result in an error message.  If you need to select a range 
  439.      or specific documents, choose a view mode other than Cite.
  440.  
  441.  19) Documents cannot be downloaded to a Folio VIEWS active infobase 
  442.      or shadow file if your cursor is within the Table of Contents.
  443.  
  444.  20) Online Connection may not work in some ADF files.
  445.  
  446.  
  447. ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURES
  448.  
  449. Creating a Pre-Defined LEXIS-NEXIS Search with OLCLINK:
  450.  
  451. Online Connection was built specifically to allow users to 
  452. launch LEXIS-NEXIS searches from Folio VIEWS, Word, 
  453. WordPerfect, and Lotus AmiPro. 
  454.  
  455. However, the program, OLCLINK.EXE allows you to launch 
  456. Online Connection in virtually any state from any custom
  457. application (or even from the command line).
  458.  
  459. In addition, by using the command line parameter string, you 
  460. can create a pre-defined search. This capability allows users
  461. or CD-ROM publishers to create enhanced program links for Folio 
  462. VIEWS infobases.
  463.  
  464. The format for creating pre-determined LEXIS-NEXIS searches is
  465. as follows:

  530. The easiest way to construct a parameter string is to run the
  531. search from the main dialog, save it to the search list, and
  532. then copy everything after the "=" character from the 
  533. [SavedSearchList] entry in the LEXIS-GA.INI file in the 
  534. Windows directory.
  535.  
  536. A maximum of 80 characters can be placed on the command line
  537. following the OLCLINK command.  Running from the Windows Run 
  538. dialog truncates the command line string at 80 characters.
  539. Sending a long command string using the shell command from
  540. Visual Basic leads to an illegal function call.
  541.
